The Espinal Vineyard is uniquely situated in the coastal part of the Limarí Valley, approximately 24 kilometers from the sea. This region is distinct for its alluvial terraces, where varying levels of clay are present at the surface. These terraces are characterized by a matrix of alluvial soil, composed of volcanic rock that has been rounded and smoothed by erosion over many kilometers as it traveled from the high Andes mountains. The soil in this vineyard is notably stony, but what sets it apart is the presence of limestone veins in the form of dust. This limestone primarily consists of calcium carbonate, originating from rocks in the Andes that were carried down by melting ice and deposited in the valley. This unique soil composition is a defining characteristic of the Limarí Valley, distinguishing it from other wine regions in Chile. The presence of limestone contributes to the production of wines with a refreshing, mineral quality, offering a style that is markedly different even from other cool-climate areas within the country. The grapes from this vineyard were carefully hand-harvested in mid-May, at the peak of their aromatic and phenolic ripeness, and placed into 20kg bins to ensure the fruit remained undamaged. Fermentation occurred in small stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by a post-fermentation maceration to enhance the wine's depth and complexity. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, allowing it to develop a refined character and integrate its flavors beautifully.
