This special release from 2019 is very special indeed. Not every day, possibly year that you see something from Pittyvaich. This 29 year old is the first release double matured in PX and Oloroso seasoned casks. These have bought the single malt an exotic, rich, fruity depth to the light, golden aromas and flavours the legendary distillery was known for.
A 'ghost' or closed distillery that worked only for 18 years before falling victim to industry consolidation in 1993, Pittyvaich has now vanished. Its dwindling stock is as rare sighted today as the shy capercaillie found in the Scottish pine forests.
The aroma is mellow yet shy, delicate fruitiness and dried flowers, beneath which lies a note of buttery sponge. The texture is ultra-smooth, the palate is rich with dried fruit sweetness of golden sultanas. It becomes spicy with gunpowder tea and is drying over all. The finish is long, smooth and a shake of powder ginger.
