The Hazelburn 9 Year Old Barolo Cask was distilled in June 2007 and bottled October 2016. This has spent 6 years in first fill bourbon barrels and then three years in refill barolo wine hogsheads, bottled and limited to 10, 800 bottles.
On the nose this is fragrant with notes of sweet confectionery and fruit salad giving way to sugared almonds, sherbet and soft fruits. On the palate it is peppery with light tannins. The sweetness is continued alongside dried fruits, raisins and the subtle hint of coconut shavings. The finish brings you dark sugars and chocolate to the fore with pineapple custard, vanilla, stewed fruits and a touch of bung cloth all present in a medium dry finish.
Springbank distillery is the oldest independent, family owned distillery in Scotland. Legal distillation began in 1828. The chairman is Hedley Wright, the great, great grandson of John Mitchell, the first legal distiller of Springbank whisky. There are a few Scottish distilleries that still malt their own barley but Springbank is the only distillery which malts 100% of its own barley, using the traditional floor maltings. The whole production process; malting, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling, happens on the one site in Campbeltown (this is very unique in Scotland).
