Description
The quality of the wines from the Malvedos vineyard is such that in Vintage declarations these wines provide the main structure for Grahams classic Vintage Ports. In most of the interim years, the wines from Malvedos will merit bottling as a single estate, or single quinta Vintage Port from a single harvest.
Grahams Malvedos Vintage Ports admirably show the Grahams house style with their expressive floral characteristics, opulent black berry fruit flavours and racy flair. They are usually more approachable when young than classic Vintage Ports and therefore make an excellent alternative to the latter while one waits for these to fully mature.
Grahams Malvedos Vintage Ports have won a simply astonishing collection of awards at the worlds major international wine competitions over recent years, clearly outperforming other producers. In the International Wine Challenge alone, Malvedos Vintage Ports have won an impressive (and unrivalled) 5 gold and 11 silver medals.
The 1988 Malvedos was the first ever Port (and in fact, the first ever Portuguese wine) to be ranked in the prestigious Wine Spectators annual Top 100 wines of the world classification. It also won gold medals for two consecutive years at the London International Wine Challenge.
1999 was the largest vintage since 1996 and turned out to be a useful vintage for the trade with some small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines. Not a general declaration.
Gorgeous bouquet redolent of chocolate, mint and spice. Luxurious and lusty palate, showing cassis and layers of blackcurrant and black plum. Big and bold but in a very polished, attractive manner.
