A hand bitingly pretty wine. Intense pure lemon and wonderfully uplifting stony minerality. Very Sancerre like, the palate is zippy, zesty and fresh, held together by creamy minerality, with tight white peach and a tiny hint of pink grapefruit.
Founded by Georg Fromm, a fourth generation Swiss winemaker in the late 80's, the name Fromm signifies the journey made from the old world to the new and is a signature element from winemakers, Hatsch Kalberer (the Swiss traditionalist)and William Hoare (Kiwi modernist) througoht the range. The Fromm philosophy places terroir over technology, and grape quality over quantity with dedication to producing intense, concentrated wines. Fromm are passionate about their vineyard health believing that careful canopy management should result in little requirement for the use of sprays. Fromm Vineyard has been free of systemic sprays for many years and now with the advent of mechanical undervine weeders is now weed spray free as well. The company has been slowly learning about biodynamic practices, each year gaining a better understanding of what works well. Recently it was decided to run Fromm Vineyard as a fully organic vineyard, with the assistance of biodynamic practices alongside. It is hoped that it will be possible to extend an organic/biodynamic program across all of the vineyards. The future of Fromm lies in caring for the health of thevineyards, the environment and of the people who work together with them.
In the Vineyard
Manual leaf removal creates good air flow and acts as a filter to the light, by naturally controlling over-ripening from excessive exposure to the sun. The grapes are hand picked and whole bunch pressed with no skin contact.
In the Winery
The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with 50% wild yeast. It is then aged on gross lees in French barrels for three months before bottling.
2010 Vintage: 90 points, Robert Parker, October 2011 "The 2010 La Strada Sauvignon Blanc gives pronounced notes of green apples, fresh limes and lemon juice with hints of wet slate and white peach. The palate is wonderfully intense with plenty of expressive citrus flavors, a good line of very crisp acid and a long minerally finish. Drinking now, it should remain fresh to 2014".
