Deep red with violet tones. The aromas are of red berry fruits, herbal and delicate tosaty notes. It has a good firm structure with energy and intensity.
Garnacha and Carinena vines grown on granitic sandy soils
It's deep berry fruited style and slight herbal overtones make it a good match for lamb and rosemary or a nice joint of roast pork (with crackling of course. If you are feeling particularly adventurous we would suggest a rich, meaty steak and kidney pudding.
This family enterprise has been operative since 1910 and indeed its oldest vineyards, consisting of Black and grey Garnacha together with Cariena, are planted on slate, gravel, and granite soils near Rosas. Virtually the only way to the world famous El Bulli restaurant goes right through Espelts pretty vineyards and it's no surprise that some of their wonderful wines feature on the El Bulli winelist.
In the year 2000, the family who have a long history of involvement with the land and viticulture,decided to build themselves a modern winery and increase their land-holdings to a total of some 200 hectares, dotted around this beautiful area of many Natural Parks where all self-respecting moneyed Catalans have their summer houses. Today, therefore, with oenologist/biologist daughter Anna at the helm, they vinify 17 different varieties, making over 10 different styles in a modern, bespoke winery which as it happens has one vineyard planted right on top of it, like a vinous roof garden!
The wines we list are as follows: the zingy pineapple and lemon flavoured Mareny (made from Sauvignon and Muscat) and altogether drier, grapefruity Vailet (Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo); and the energetic, mid-intensity, redcurrant flavoured Saul (Garnacha and Cariena) - which accounts for 50% of their total production. Last but not least is their excellent dessert wine Airam, a blend of Garnachas and the native Lledoner, a tawny coloured pudding wine, which has a pronounced ginger, marmalade and marzipan character together with excellent, fresh acidity. Aided by a real grasp of design - this is after all, Salvador Dal country - 50% of their sales are in export markets and word continues to spread
