The Cabernet Sauvignon vines produced high quality grapes, which were soon in demand from neighbouring wineries. Norma became more and more interested in the making of wine and began to study the subject. Soon a cellar was in place and in 1984 the first legal Warwick vintage was released (a Cabernet Sauvignon). Mike is passionately involved in many aspects of the South African and global wine industry and has held senior leadership positions in industry bodies. From 1771 til 1902, Warwick Wine Farm was known as the farm De Goede Sukses. After the Anglo Boer war in 1902, Colonel William Alexander Gordon, Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire regiment decided against returning to England and bought the farm. He renamed it Warwick as a tribute to his regiment and the rest, as they say, is history. Warwick was purchased on April 1st 1964 by Stan Ratcliffe after an extensive search for the best terroir in the Cape. Together with his new bride Norma , they soon realized the potential of the extraordinary property and began planting Cabernet Sauvignon. It seemed Norma had the talent for making great wines and production soon increased. In 1986 Warwick Trilogy was releases, a Bordeaux style blend which has since became one of the flagships of the South African Wine Industry.

Hannibal is a thoughtfully crafted red blend from Bouchard Finlayson, inspired by the classic structure and elegance of Italian varieties. The tension between the tight mineral core and creamy middle pallet allows for great complexity and a persistent finish.

Producer Details
Wines from the Waterkloof Estate emphasise restraint, elegance and a strong mineral character due to the vineyards exposed position on the upper slopes of the famed Schaapenberg Mountain. High above False Bay the Waterkloof vineyards face directly onto the Atlantic Ocean at the southern limit of the Stellenbosch wine region. This very special site with its strong maritime influence, steep aspect and unique soil profile allows for the production of truly fine wines. The winemaking and viticultural team led by Werner Engelbrecht follow natural winemaking methods with minimal intervention, including the use of open-top fermenters, whole bunch pressing, wild yeast fermentation, extended fermentation periods and extra lees contact to maximise the terroir character. Since the first vintage in 2005 the estate has garnered widespread praise and many awards, producing some of South Africas best and most sought after Sauvignon and Merlot based wines. Waterkloof has also been at the forefront of innovation producing South Africas first iconic ros (Cape Coral). Wines under the Peacock Ridge label are produced from the lower more protected slopes and are rounder with greater generosity and a more forward style.

In the Vineyard
The farm rises up to 300 metres above sea level with the Hottentots-Holland and Helderberg Mountains as backdrop and descends to a mere four kilometres from the False Bay coast.

In the Winery
Werner has a hands "nearly off mantra, the grapes were whole-bunch pressed in Waterkloofs new gravitational cellar and fermentation was allowed to occur naturally relying solely on wild yeasts. In South Africa, where true cool-climate vineyards are rare, Iona's position at 420 metres above sea level overlooking the Atlantic is exceptional. Farming is carried out with minimal intervention, guided by organic and biodynamic principles that prioritise soil health — with natural vineyard balance maintained by a resident flock of geese providing effective pest control. The grapes come from Langrug, one of Iona's small farms in the Elgin Valley, where diverse soils and cooling ocean breezes create ideal conditions for slow ripening. Mr P is crafted from younger vines and matured in older barrels — making it the accessible entry point to Iona's cool-climate Pinot Noir philosophy. Hand-harvested, de-stemmed but not crushed, with 10% whole-bunch fermentation adding complexity, then matured for 11 months in seasoned French oak (2nd, 3rd, and 4th fill).
