Get in the Festive Spirit with this Delicious Snowball Recipe

The Snowball is an iconic Christmas cocktail that’s brought delight to festive households for decades. A retro cocktail with a deliciously creamy consistency and a rich, sweet-and-sour flavour, the Snowball is a winter warmer that’s very easy to make.

What’s in a Snowball Cocktail?

Traditionally, the Snowball is made up of Advocaat (a brandy-based liqueur), lemonade and either lime juice or lime cordial. Aside from the optional ice and cherry to garnish, that’s pretty much it!

Snowballs are easy to make, which is part of why they’re a staple Christmas cocktail in households all over the UK. Typically, you’ll want an Advocaat-lemonade ratio at anything from 1:3 to 1:1, depending on how strong you like it (the Drink Finder recipe hits the sweet spot at a 1:2 ratio, but adjust as desired).

Snowball Recipe

Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients

  • 50ml Advocaat
  • 100ml lemonade
  • 15ml lime juice or lime cordial
  • Ice (optional)
  • Cherry, lime slice or orange slice to garnish

Method

  1. Pour the lemonade and lime juice/cordial into a highball glass (over ice if using it).
  2. Next add the Advocaat, allowing it to sink through the lemonade and lime mixture.
  3. Stir gently to mix the ingredients, top with your garnish of choice and enjoy!

Alternatively, you can shake the ingredients together with ice in a cocktail mixer for a better integrated mixture.

What is Advocaat?

If you’re wondering what exactly goes into the key ingredient here, Advocaat is a liqueur with a brandy base. It’s believed to have originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century, hence the name, which means “lawyer” in Dutch. Fun fact: the full name of the drink is advocatenborrel, which means “lawyers’ drink”.

Advocaat is made from egg yolks, brandy and sugar, giving it its custard-like consistency and flavour. The undisputed brand king is Warninks Advocaat, with a delicious recipe that has made it a bestseller among all other Advocaat brands.

Where Did the Snowball Originate From?

Snowballs were hugely popular in the 1970s, but the drink is thought to have originated 20-30 years before that in the UK. The name comes from the frothy, snowball-like layer of foam that sits on the surface of the drink as a result of the mixture between Advocaat and lemonade.

Despite being served cold, the Snowball is a traditional “winter warmer” with the hearty, belly-warming flavour of the Advocaat bringing some much-needed heat to the winter months.

Alternative Recipe: Try the Decadent Champagne Snowball

If the classic Snowball isn’t quite your speed, why not try the more refined but equally tasty Champagne Snowball?

The Champagne Snowball swaps out the lemonade for champagne and sherry, resulting in an incredibly boozy Christmas cocktail that’s not to be missed.

Simply pour 60ml of champagne into a glass, shake together 60ml of Advocaat, 30ml of sherry and 15ml of lime cordial, pour over the champagne and enjoy!
