Classic Eggnog Recipe: A Christmas Favourite!

Eggnog is undoubtedly the most well-known traditional drink out there. A Christmas cocktail with a creamy, frothy texture and a deliciously sweet flavour, it’s a winter warmer in the truest sense.

It’s also incredibly versatile and can be made alcohol-free or with bourbon whiskey, brandy or rum depending on your preference. We love its versatility!

If you’re wondering how to make eggnog yourself, follow this delicious recipe to bring a healthy dose of Christmas cheer to your household this winter.

Ingredients: What’s in Eggnog?

This recipe makes between 4-6 servings.

  • 80ml alcohol of your choice – brandy, bourbon or dark rum
  • 480ml ml full-fat milk
  • 200ml double cream
  • 100g golden caster sugar
  • 6 egg yolks (large)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (+ more to garnish)
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Eggnog Recipe Method

  1. Beat the egg yolks in a large bowl until smooth, then add the sugar and continue whisking until the mixture becomes pale in colour, fluffy and thick.
  2. In a separate saucepan over a medium heat, mix the milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla extract. Allow to slowly come to a boil, stirring occasionally, then remove from the heat.
  3. Add the egg yolk mixture to the saucepan and return to a low-medium heat until it thickens – but don’t let it boil.
  4. Remove from the heat and allow to sit for a couple of minutes before stirring in the cream and your spirit of choice. Ensure the mixture is fully combined before placing it in the refrigerator to cool.
  5. When ready to serve, garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy!

We hope you enjoy this delicious eggnog as much as we do – it’s a brilliant addition to wintery nights around the fire and lazy Christmas afternoons.

Our Favourite Spirits to Put in Eggnog

When it comes to choosing a spirit to put in eggnog, you’re spoiled for choice. Here are some of our favourites:

If Using Rum, Go Dark

Dark rum is delightfully rich and perfectly counterbalances the sweetness of the eggnog mixture. We recommend Captain Morgan Dark Rum as the affordable option, or Woods 100 Navy Rum for more of a refined, delicious treat.

The Best Brandy for Eggnog

Cognac is your best bet if you’re keen on adding brandy to this Christmas cocktail. There’s no need to go for the most expensive bottle available, so we’d recommend picking up some Delamain XO Pale & Dry Cognac.

Our Top Bourbon Whiskey Pick for Eggnog

Four Roses bourbon is our favourite for the ideal spiked eggnog – the Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon is a fantastic option, while the original Four Roses Bourbon is a good, slightly cheaper alternative.
