Bourbon is a distilled spirit which is made primarily from corn and originates from America.

Bourbon whisky was introduced to America by the Scottish and Irish settlers of the 1700’s. As they strove to recreate the best of their homelands in their new country, they had to adapt their traditional recipes and use new ingredients, such as corn, rye and wheat. In addition, no smoke was used to dry the grain, resulting in a drink that is sweeter and more deeply flavoured than the originals from which it was derived.

Today, Bourbon whisky is recognised as a distinctive drink in itself, no longer an offshoot of European whisky. Kentucky is the most famous producer of Bourbon whisky, being the site where most of the original distilleries were set up. Now, however, there are distilleries across the USA, offering brands such as Jack Daniels, Maker’s Mark and Wild Turkey.
