This wine is produced to be served at the annual Palio celebrations organised by the Contrade (districts) of Siena, which have taken place since 1656.Predominantly a Merlot and Sangiovese blend, the grapes were sourced from San Felice's renowned Chianti Classico vineyards. Aromas of ripe cherries and violet lead onto an approachable palate, with soft tannins and balanced acidity.
A large estate, with 180 hectares of immaculately maintained vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga, which lies adjacent to its sister property Villa la Pagliaia. The wines at both are made by Leonardo Bellacini, a master of the 'non interventionist' approach, giving classic expressions of high quality Sangiovese, restrained and complex and with great balance and depth. The secret lies in high quality grapes from exceptional vineyards, driven by an intensive research programme, in particular by selection of the best naturally occuring clones. The resulting wines are understated but satisfying, unencumbered by new oak, Cabernet or flashy winemaking.
In the Vineyard
Grapes are sourced from vineyards within Castelnuovo Berardenga, at approximately 350-400 metres above sea level.
In the Winery
Merlot was harvested at the start of September, followed by Sangiovese, and finally the Cabernet Sauvignon - towards the middle of October. The wine underwent 9 days fermentation on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation, and maturation in stainless steel.
Serve with grilled meat and vegetables dishes, or simply with pasta.
