Description

Seven generations and nearly two centuries have passed since the founding of Domaines Schlumberger. In 1810, Nicolas Schlumberger established his vineyards on the renowned, sunny slopes above the town of Guebwiller. Through successive generations the holding has grown from the original few small plots to one of Frances largest and finest vineyards. Seventh generation Alain Beydon-Schlumberger runs the domaine.

Grapes

100% Gewurztraminer

Viticulture

The Kessler vineyard is situated in a small valley facing east and south-east which shelters if from the cold north winds blow down the valley of Guebwiller. The reddish soil sits on a bedrock of Vosges sandstone with some limestone out crops at the bottom of the valley.

Wine Making

Hand-picked, put into crates. Whole bunches pressed. Static settling of the must. Fermented in temperature controlled tuns. Raised on the less for 8 months.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Golden yellow with a good intensity.

Nose: A slightly reserved nose dominated by candied fruits and light floral notes. Aerating reveals delicate aromas of exotic fruits, citrus and graoefruit. Complex and beautifully mature.

Palate: Good body dominated again by candied fruits. Exotic fruit, citrus and grapefruit flavour are also present with slight floral hints and an underlying minerality. A very long and marked finish.

Food Matching

An ideal companion of strong cheese, Munster ripened with Gewurztraminer Marc or a salad of lobster with ginger.
